– Noel, Douglas, Vieira, steal show
Strong individual performances from Sheldon Noel, Dominique Douglas and Tequain Vieira for their respective schools highlighted the second day of the National Schools’ Basketball Festival (NSBF) yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Noel set the tone for a thrilling day of high school basketball when he kept Charlestown’s tradition of churning out quality basketball players alive with a 24-point performance that led his team to a 42-29 win against Berbice combined in an Under-18 game.
The competition is being contested in Under-15, Under-18 and Open categories. Noel was the only player in double figures for his school with Jamal Carbury, Murtland Ward and Orson Amsterdam scoring six points each in support.
Antonio Cornelius was the highest scorer for Berbice with nine points with Dameon Butters putting up eight points.
Despite a game high 20 points from Vincente Dominic, President’s College failed to get pass the well-composed Guyana Education Trust College in another Under-18 clash. The Trust College got the better of the leading secondary institution 31-25.
Shikwin Mickle scored nine points for the trust college while Nyametekene Bacchus and Kade Pearce finished with eight points each.
Douglas scored 15 points for Kwakwani Secondary to help them to a tense two-point 29-27 win against Region 10 nemesis, New Silver City that had the former national point guard, Marlon Pollydore in double figures with 12 points.
Vieira then placed his name among those players that stood out on the second day with a good all round performance that included 14 points to help Marian Academy to a 42-11 blowout against an East Bank combined team.
Joel Semple was the only player in double figures for East Bank with eight points. The contest is to continue today at the same venue.
