St. Agnes made a clean sweep of the Boys and Girls titles in the Georgetown Zone of this year’s Primary Schools Windball Cricket Championships which was played recently, at the National Park Tarmac.
The champions defeated Mae’s in the Boys final, while they swept past ABC in the Girls final.
In the Boys final, St. Agnes won by five wickets.
Mae’s after been sent in to bat made 44-4 with Dominic Helwick hitting 22, while Rodwell Hamilton grabbed 3-12 and Player of the tournament Jamal Scipio1-17.
St Agnes in their reply, ended on 48-5 off 4.2 overs. Julius Goodluck hit a top-score of 12. Samuel Desir bagged 5-15 in a losing effort bowling for Mae’s.
In the third place playoff, North Georgetown defeated St. Angela’s by eight wickets.
St Angela’s batted first and reached 56-3 off the allotted overs with Timond Tennis 26 and Tevin Thomas 20, being the principal scorers.
Shamar Blackman took 2-13 bowling for North Georgetown.
North Georgetown in reply, closed on 57-2. S. Blackman returned to top-score of 15, while Adeyemi Watson 14 and Kadeem Blackman 11 were the other batsmen to reach double figures.
In the girls final- St. Agnes beat ABC by ten wickets.
ABC after winning the toss decided to bat first and made 28-7 with Victoria Najab 10. Bowling for St Agnes, Demola Bristol grabbed 3-8, Joda Joseph 2-9 and Cassie Jhingoree 2-11.
St Agnes in their chase for victory reached 33-0 off 2.3 overs with Player of the final C. Jhingoree 24 including two sixes and two fours.
2009 third placed team Mae’s retained that position after defeating St Angela’s by 15 runs.
Mae’s invited to bat first made 100-1.
St Angela’s replied with 85-0 with Cherryann Fraser smashing 32 including two maximums and four boundaries and Yeshia Benjamin 28.
Meanwhile, the presentation ceremony was graced with the presence of Director of Sport Neil Kumar and Director of Youth within the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport Carl Brandon.
St. Agnes for their effort won the MCYS and National Sports Commission Trophies.
Kumar in his remarks praised the organisers for doing a wonderful job once again and pledged and in support offered to make the Gymnasium available for the encampment of students who will be travelling from the other regions that competed in the 2010 programme.
Brandon also echoed the sentiments expressed by Kumar, adding that it was his first visit at such a tournament and was extremely pleased with what he saw.
He urged the students to continue to do well both in the classroom and in sports.
Organiser Allister Munroe, who is attached to the NSC, said he was delighted to see both officials present to witness the day’s proceedings, adding that they played significant roles in making the tournament possible.
According to Munroe we would be hosting the Trinidad & Tobago National School Girls Windball Cricket Team in August, for the 4th International T20 series.
A number of players will be selected and the names published shortly to attend trials for selection to represent Guyana in the 4th Annual International School Girls Windball T20 series against Trinidad & Tobago during August in Guyana.
