A 23-year-old motorcyclist lost his life on Sunday night after he rode into the open door of a parked minibus. At the time he was heading home on his motor Chappy.
Lakeraj Kushera, of 450 Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, was pronounced dead around 21:30 hours, about 30 minutes after the collision which occurred on the Good Hope Railway Embankment.
The driver of the minibus, Arjune Ramcharitar, of Mon Repos, sustained a broken leg when Kushera slammed into him before crashing into the open door of the bus.
He is now a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to reports, Ramcharitar was proceeding east along the dark embankment road when he stopped to investigate a strange sound that was emanating from the back of his vehicle.
After checking and not finding the fault, he was about to re-enter his vehicle having opened his door when Kushera, who was proceeding at a reasonable rate of speed, slammed into the open door.
Kushera was flung from his motorcycle and landed several yards away on the road, sustaining severe head injuries.
His body lay on the road even as relatives wailed uncontrollably until undertakers removed it from the scene.
The dead man’s father told Kaieteur News that his son left home around 20:00 hours but did not say where he was going.
Then at about 21:10 hours, the family received a telephone call informing them that Kushera was involved in an accident.
“When we go, we see he lie down on the road; he was already dead,” Kushera’s father told Kaieteur News.
Kushera was the eldest of four children.
Police have detained the mini bus as well as Kushera’s mangled motorcycle and are awaiting Ramcharitar’s discharge from hospital before proceeding with any possible charges.
Kushera was the second person to die in a motor vehicular accident on Sunday.
His death followed that of Police Corporal Sharyn Denny who was killed when the pick-up he was travelling in crashed on the East Bank Demerara carriageway in the vicinity of Pearl Village.
