Eleven-year-old, Jagindra Persaud, of Adventure, Essequibo Coast, and pupil of the Suddie Primary School, was the nation’s seventh highest achiever at this year’s Grade Six Assessment.
Yesterday, he said that he was very proud. Initially, he was speechless when Kaieteur News broke the news of his success to him.
The young Persaud, who was about to attend extra lessons at the time of the media visit, said that although he was academically brilliant he gave credit to his efforts by attending extra lessons, which afforded him to be exposed to ‘team work’, and to his parents who supported him by staying up with him late each night.
The aspiring lawyer said that he attended extra lessons from 5:00pm to 10:00 pm each day leading up to his exams.
Basdeo Persaud, Jagindra’s father, who was also surprised at learning of his son’s success by way of the media, said he always recognised that his son has a special ability to succeed.
He noted that this was recognised in both his efficient abilities in reading and writing. According to Mr. Persaud, he said his son’s results in school are always above 90 per cent, which often enabled him to attain first place.
Omawattie Seepersaud, Jagindra’s mother, said that she learnt of her son’s success after receiving a phone call from a reporter.
The proud mother said that although she was not expecting her son to have done exceedingly well, he always told her that he would like to attend a school in Georgetown.
She said that all the hard work has paid off. She would accompany her son to and from lessons each day.
Head Mistress, Mrs. Permella Persaud, also learnt of one of her pupil’s success from the media.
“I know that my teachers work really hard, despite constraints.”
Jagindra would like his fellow pupils to study a little harder and take their school work seriously.
He said that Mathematics is his favourite subject.
