– fans promised a day of keen rivalry
When the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club host its July 18 Meeting at the South Dakota Circuit, many questions that surfaced recently will be answered providing that the very best competitors in their respective categories take to the grid.
A sport that has grown steadily over the years since its revival, among the questions that could expect to be answered are who is the best driver locally, especially in light of the return of former champion Mark Vieira after a one year hiatus and who will make up Guyana’s team to compete at the second leg of the Caribbean Series at Bushy Park in Barbados.
According to a member of the Organising Committee, this Meeting is very significant and everything is being done to make as successful as any other in the past.
“We are making a valiant effort to get the best drivers and riders from overseas to come to Guyana to add to the rivalry among the locals and fans are being urged to make it a date at the South Dakota Circuit.”
With Guyana atop the points table in the Caribbean Series and a large contingent expected to travel to Barbados at the end of August to boost the country’s chances of winning the Series, every competitor eligible to participate in the regional championship will no doubt be aiming to produce an outstanding performance at the local Meet.
Vieira, who is extremely popular at Bushy Park will be looking to go there with some kind of form and confidence, while reigning Group 4 champion Andrew King must be hoping that the car performs more reliable that what obtained in Jamaica where he failed to make it to the starting grid after suffering mechanical problems.
Kevin Jeffrey, who has been the most reliable of the three and currently stands third position in the Caribbean driver’s championship, should be favoured to do well, especially with the work that he has done recently on the car.
The three (Vieira, King and Jeffrey) should provide exciting racing throughout the day as they battle for supremacy, but the other divisions are anticipated to supply much thrills as well.
Stephen Vieira, who had a solid outing in Jamaica, will resume his long standing rivalry with Canadian Kevin Graham, who is expected to be present, while the likes of Maurice Menezes and Gregory Lopes are not to be counted out.
The lower categories also bring much excitement and it is expected to be no less come race day where twenty-four races are carded.
