Dear Editor,
The issue of racial divisions in our society is the responsibility of all Guyanese (in Guyana and abroad). It is good that the British High Commissioner has flagged up this very crucial subject matter, the week of his departure from Guyana.
What cannot be disputed is that the British cannot extricate its decisive role in fostering racism in our society and must bare some responsibility for the continued divisions in our society.
Our history is packed with examples of racism and brutality against our people going back to the days of slavery, unto the period of Indentured-ship to the present time.
The racial divisions of our society are rooted in British colonial rule – where oppression and super exploitation was the order of the day. The birth marks of this brutality will remain with us, until we (Guyanese) make a deliberate effort to remove these scourges. The prolonged interference of the British in our internal politics is very visible even, today.
For those of us who are interested in learning more of the British and the American infamous role in our country and other Third World countries – then, read the following text books – Dr. Cheddi Jagan’s, “The West on Trial”, Dr. Walter Rodney’s – “How Europe Under-developed Africa” and “A History of the Guyanese Working People”.
In Walter two books, he explains the root causes of racism and racial discrimination that were used by the British and European slave masters and their apologists to keep our people in subjection. The cruel method of the “divide and rule” was used to maintain their iron rule.
Our answer today, in trying to end this evil, is a Government of National Unity Government and Reconstruction. It is definitely on the Agenda and it is evolving with the level of rapidity beyond the control of anyone. Civil Society is the chief agent for this change and everyone must get on board. We must do whatever we can – it is our best chance to change Guyana and change the world.
The Jagdeo-Ramotar faction of the PPP is definitely in a panic mood and is on the run. There will be a decisive break within the PPP – among the most progressive section – the workers’ and peasants section. They will join this new movement for change nearer to the date of the election. There is no doubt about this – this new force will come alive!
The key to the formation of a National Unity Government and Good Governance will be a radical programme, which must involve an open consultation with all of our people in Guyana – especially those at grassroots level. No party or group must impose anyone on us as a Presidential candidate – let us make that choice.
