BELVEDERE VILLAGE, CORENTYNE – So far only ten entities have expressed an interest in establishing businesses at the Belvedere Industrial Site on the Corentyne and these applications date back to 2008.
Chairman of Region Six, Zulfikar Mustapha, said that Government is now re-focusing its attention on the site and if more persons grab the opportunity then Government would be willing to invest more money in the venture.
In 2007 the Ministry of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce expended some $35 M on basic preparation work which included land filling, construction of the drainage system and empoldering of the site. Basic infrastructure work on the site was completed last year.
The Belvedere Industrial site is 1,200 acres. It would initially carry 16 plots; each one would consist of 14,000 square feet. The lease for the land is in the custody of the Kilcoy/Hampshire Neighbourhood Democratic Council.
He pointed out that there were not enough applications for plots of land there and no solid commitments, hence the venture was tossed on the back burner. But with what he called new investments in East Berbice, including the Berbice River Bridge, the drive to push the site has now intensified. According to him, more job opportunities would be created.
The Chairman also threw out a challenge to the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce to ensure that its members apply for plots at the site. He said this year he is striving to ensure that the site kicks off even if it means accepting applications from persons outside of Region Six.
Last year, the Region Six Administration was given full control of the Belvedere Industrial Site.
Persons who are desirous in establishing industries can now apply directly to the Regional Administration or the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce.
The Chairman indicated that so far the industrial location would house molding, furniture, pharmaceutical, engineering, food processing, garment manufacturing, chemical, and electronic concerns.
When Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister Manniram Prashad launched the Berbice Expo and Trade Fair on June 17th, he called on investors to make use of the facility. The Minister said even if there are only a few business concerns occupying the site he would be willing to return within a month to commission the facility.
