The Ex-Guyana Defense Force (GDF) Association is completing two years as an organisation. The association in a statement disclosed that its membership has just passed the 800 mark and the growth continues.
“We have been attending to over 100 ex soldiers (our brothers and sisters) who are now shut-ins. Our list to date numbers 86, who are still alive” said the President of the Association, Lieutenant Colonel (retired) George Gomes.
“We can all be rightfully proud of our existence at this juncture, because we continue to be the only organisation that ex soldiers could come to seek help and assistance and be guaranteed that the assistance would be provided.”
Lt. Col. Gomes said that one of the major objectives continues to be the institution of Veteran Care and the organisation will be persistent until this is realised.
“It is humiliating to see ex soldiers, who have served our country, defended our borders, protected our territorial integrity, wasting away at the Palms, Dharam Sala, Night Shelter, and others left to the mercy of impoverished families and relatives.”
He said that the GDF needs to be more accommodating and adopt a policy on Veteran Care. However, the GDF may argue that its focus is on serving soldiers.
Lt. Col. Gomes explained there is a need to understand that no country in the world discards its veterans, and notwithstanding their financial constraints, they have an obligation to the men and women who pioneered the way in making the army the institution it is today.
He added that through the GDF, funding could be sought from Central Government to finance programmes for ex soldiers.
Ex-Guyana Defense Force (GDF) Association stated, three full time staff members are paid and the organisation tries to give each shut-in, a monthly hamper, with the assistance of Food for the Poor (Guyana) Inc .
He further added the organisation would welcome any other form of support for this programme.
“We don’t intend to die, and we will not fade away. We will always remember our service and continue to maintain the bond within our veteran community.”
