For the second time in as many months Junior Commonwealth lightweight champion, Clevon Rock turned in a classical display to defeat his nemesis, Republican representative, Nankumar Singh, distinguishing himself as a true champion while strengthening the ambassadorial responsibilities placed on his shoulders for the upcoming Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico starting next month.
The last time the two fighters squared off at the Princess Hotel on the under-card of the BrisO Promotions World title extravaganza, the former pugilist triumphed by a close 2-1 verdict. The large crowd in attendance at that fight cheered vociferously as Nankumar was exiting the ring and many felt that he had done enough to earn the judges’ nod. The close decision prompted the promoters to stage the rematch and the largest crowd to date to have witnessed the action in the ProAm extravaganza was treated to unbridled action that left them in an exhilarating mood.
A rangy pugilist from the Guyana Defence Force Boxing gym, Rock got on his bicycle from the onset, utilizing stiff jabs to keep the brawny Republican at bay. As Rock boxed circles around him, Nankumar plodded behind him swinging vicious lefts and rights. A few landed but the slick movements exhibited by Rock nullified the effects to some extent.
The Republican pugilist entered the second round with flailing fists and succeeded in tagging Rock on several occasions after the latter boxer abandoned his boxing techniques and decided to brawl. It was during this phase that Nankumar left an indelible mark on the minds of those witnessing the bout. Several ramrod punches turned the proceedings in his favour but just when he began to get assertive Rock reverted to his stick and move ploy, interceding with several well timed punches that backed Rock to the ropes.
The final stanza was as classy as it was definitive.
Rock danced and jabbed while Nankumar countered with several ramrod roundhouse punches. The punches slowed Rock down momentarily but not for long. He regrouped and launched a two fisted attack on Nankumar but the Republican refused to say die. With his hands working overtime, he punched for all he was worth with Rock matching his every blow.
The spectators shouted boisterously as each boxer starred at various stages of the bout. When the final bell sounded the fans were divided over the winner while both principals raised their hands, albeit prematurely, to the cheering crowd. The judges eventually awarded the bout to Rock amidst dissenting outcries from Nankumar’s supporters. Rock returns for regular training on the national team scheduled to attend the Puerto Rico Games mid next month.
Dexter Jordon, also scheduled to box at those Games had little trouble overcoming Ryan Alli. Obviously opting to use the fight to garner valuable practice, Jordon employed good techniques to defeat a determined Alli whose woes continued up to the final bell. Burt Braithwaite, also preparing for the CAC Games was also in winners’ row even though he was not as assertive as his colleagues. Apparently anxious to stamp his authority, Braithwaite was a bit wayward in his application and even though he showed some spurts of his old self; his attacks lacked the type of application necessary for the impending tournament.
In the opening bout of the amateur segment, Orlando Allicock boxed circles around Republican boxer Daneshwar Narine and forced the referee to call a halt to the proceedings midway into the third frame.
Meanwhile, the team of boxers preparing for the CAC Games was re-sited last Friday morning from the National Gymnasium to more comfortable accommodation at the old Guyana National Service accommodation, Base Command Sophia. Coach Terrence Poole told Kaieteur Sport that the boxers would be engaged in stiff training for the remainder of their sessions in Guyana. He will conduct training sessions at the National Park in the mornings from 05:00hrs and in the afternoons at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym, Albouystown from 16:00hrs. Sebert Blake and Poole would accompany the team to the Games.
