Instances of child abuse are more rampant in Georgetown and in the mining town of Linden, the Social Services Statistical Bulletin for 2009 has shown.
The Bulletin is produced by the Statistical Unit, Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security. It recorded child abuse cases by sex and age for the period January to December 2009.
It shows that 27 per cent of abuse cases were physical, while 22 per cent were sexual; verbal abuse cases amounted to six per cent of the statistics while neglect accounted for 43 per cent of the cases reported. Two percent of the cases reported were of abandonment. The two districts with the highest record of abuse were Georgetown with 241 cases while Linden followed with 153 cases.

A summary of the adult adjudications indicated a total of 534 persons were under supervision for the year. In total 52 per cent of males were under supervision versus 48 per cent for females.
Most persons were under voluntary supervision (72 per cent), followed by probation of 25 per cent and NOC three per cent. The first quarter recorded more males than females under supervision but the third and fourth quarters recorded more females than males by a small margin.
