The goodwill inter school U-15 football tournament for Secondary schools in the New Amsterdam/Canje Area concluded recently with Vryman’s Erven Secondary (VESS) getting the better of old nemesis (Berbice High School) in the finals to come out victors in the competition which was sponsored by Sherlon Hetmyer and Shaun Nurse and was played at the Scott Church ground.
Six schools participated with the schools being divided into two groups. Group ‘A’ comprising of VESS, Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) and New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary (NAMS), while Group B was made up of BHS, Tutorial Academy Secondary School (TASS) and Canje Secondary School (CSS).
Each team in the respective groups were required to play each other once with the two top teams advancing to play the top two in the other group.
Results of the games are as follows:
VESS gained a walk over from NAMS.
BHS and TASS played to a 2-2 draw. The goal scorers were Mark Wong and Esau Richmond for BHS while Jamal Blair and Nigel King scored for TASS.
VESS beat BEI 2-0 with Anthon Small and Lloyd Fresco scoring for the winners.
BHS and CSS played to a 0-0 draw with Keyon McKenzie for BHS and Edmar Semple for CSS being the respective goal scorers.
BEI then hammered NAMS 5-1; Shamar Richards 2, Devon James, Omari Bentham and Deon Grant one each. NAMS consolation goal came off the booth of Shakeel Grant.
In the final first round encounter TASS and CSS played to a 0-0 draw.
In semi-final play BHS won from BEI 3-1 with Keyon McKenzie scoring a double while and Mark Wong had one. Deon Grant pulled one back for BEI.
In the other semi-final game VESS got the better of CSS by a 3-1 margin. For VESS Anthon Small, Lloyd Fresco and Anthony Amsterdam were on target. CSS got their goal off the boot of Edmar Semple.
The third place and final encounters were both very close game with the respective winners being decided on penalty kicks.
The third place play off saw CSS beating BEI on sudden death penalty kicks after the game ended 0-0 after full and extra time.
In the final which was another close encounter, VESS got the better of BHS 3-1 on penalty kicks after the game ended 1-1 after full and extra time.
Mark Wong for BHS and Lloyd Freso for VESS were the goal scorers.
In the presentation ceremony which followed the four top teams, in VESS, BHS, CSS and BEI, all received trophies for their performance.
The individual prizes were won by Anthon Small of VESS who was voted the MVP, James Isaacs BHS the Best Goalkeeper, while Keyon McKenzie also of BHS with 3 goals was adjudged the highest goal scorer. They all received trophies.
The competition was coordinated by former national player Neil “Grizzly” Humphrey.
