National Scrabble Champion Abigail McDonald will join Caribbean Scrabble Champion, Fred Collins and other top scrabble players journeying to Linden to compete for honours in the annual Earl Vigilance Memorial scrabble tournament slated for the LEAP Office, Republic Drive Linden, tomorrow, Sunday June 27.
In last year’s tournament McDonald had rebounded from a second round defeat by Michael Benjamin to chalk up 5 games and a positive spread of 287. She subsequently defeated Colin Chichester by a spread of 52 and Grace Hercules (79) before the lunch break was taken.
When play resumed after lunch McDonald gobbled up Krakowsky (67) before edging past Orlando Michael by a mere 7 points. She was especially brutal against Carmichael, winning by a spread of 187.
Vigilance was a mean scrabble player so it came as no surprise that the tournament commemorating his death anniversary was contested in a very competitive environment.
Floyd Carmichael had also won 5 games but placed second by dint of a lower spread of 124. Leon Belony completed the podium positions with 4 games and a positive spread of 529.
Ulric Harris, James Krakowsky, and R O Michael all amassed four games each but their spreads of 184, 135 and a negative spread of 52, respectively, denied them from occupying a podium spot. Moen Gafoor finished with a negative spread of one.
This weekend’s tournament promises to be just as competitive especially since most of the top players have been engaged in serious training, each with an eye on the top prize.
Players are asked to assemble at the MFK Supermarket, Hadfield Street by 07:30hrs on Sunday (tomorrow) morning for the pick up. The team leaves for Linden by 08:00hrs.
