A very importantly placed person (I would like to name him but he may deny it, then sue) in the PPP was angry that his son did not win the coveted prize of best debater in a Youth Parliament competition in which I was one of the judges.
In a conversation with me he implied that we, the judges (Priya Manickchand in her more independent days was also a judge on the same panel), didn’t know how to assess the qualities of people (I hope he tells King Kong what a poor assessor he is). He strongly exclaimed that his son should have won
I wrote about this episode twice over the years on this page because it holds important lessons about the basic principles of life. Here was a man who is part of a really bad government, the worst in the history of the English-speaking Caribbean where dirty, nasty, horrible things are done to thousands and thousands of innocent citizens of the land but he feels aggrieved about what happened to a loved one of his.
This human being then understands the concept of pain. He is capable of conceptualizing the nature of trauma. He experienced it.
Yet this man and his colleagues continue to hurt so many other people in this country, never stopping for a moment to think that the victims experience the same pain he felt when his son didn’t win a prize he wanted him to have. The point being made here is that fascists are horrible people in that they know fully well about the sacred values that hold civilization intact but they employ those values only in their lives and deny other people their entitlement to those moral and emotional feelings.
The cry against the Stabroek News by Randy Persaud for not publishing his letters (as he claims) was extremely distasteful and at the same time comical. I hope Stella Ramsaroop, a fellow columnist, is reading this. No one is going to respect you if you do not respect yourself.
Randy Persaud and the disappearing Prem Misir have continued to complain about unfair journalism at the Stabroek News and Kaieteur News when these two men are influential figures at the Chronicle, in my opinion a gutter newspaper overflowing with the weapon the Guyanese fascists like to use against their opponents – filth
Persaud wrote the newspaper and intoned that his letters are being denied the light of day. The editor replied that he doesn’t print missives that are already published in other newspapers. That is not the point of this article. My contention is that Persaud knows that denying a right to a person is wrong thus his complaint.
Why then Persaud does not practice at the Chronicle what he wants the Stabroek News to do? This is not only horrible double standards it is something worse which I would not put in words. Here is what Persaud is telling the Guyanese people, “I Randy Persaud as a Guyanese citizen (correct me if I am wrong but isn’t he an American citizen too?) am entitled to the right to have my views published in the newspapers; this is a right the Stabroek News should not deny me but I don’t care whose rights the Chronicle ignores.”
This is the logic of fascism. It is like the President. He complains about unfair treatment of Third World countries by the developed world but Mr. Jagdeo is a violator of his subjects’ rights. If Randy Persaud can comprehend the content of a violation when he is the victim (though I must make it clear, the Stabroek News gave him a plausible answer), why then can’t he fathom the hurt others feel when his government destroys the entitlements of his fellow Guyanese?
The essential point I want to make here is that the elected fascists of this land are not blistering, blundering animals incapable of conceiving the fundamental principles that hold civilization together. They do understand life’s priceless values. The PPP big wig did when he told me his son was not evaluated fairly by me and Manickchand.
Dr. Randy Persaud did when he wrote the Stabroek News to complain about his right to express himself being derecognized. So why then do the elected fascists so flagrantly violate the rights of the Guyanese citizens the latest being the poor owners of a mini-bus and a truck respectively? The answer is evil. I have continuously argued on this page that, using the concepts of the philosopher, Hannah Arendt, the elected fascists of Guyana are truly evil people
