Mr. Leon Wiggins Snr. received his gifts from Mr. Patrick Lewis - Cricket Manager of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club
A total of 60 outstanding Fathers were honored by the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club on Father’s Day under the clubs Tribute to Heroes Programme.
The fathers were treated to a special luncheon held at the Club’s Area ‘H’ Ground Office, organised by the club’s Farfan & Mendes Under-15, Bakewell Under-17, Pepsi Under-19 and Gizmos & Gadgets Under-23 Cricket Teams.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster who delivered the feature address at the function spoke on the importance of fatherhood. He noted that there has been a breakdown of family values and structure and called on fathers throughout Guyana to fulfill their God given responsibility as the Head of the Home. Foster blasted those fathers who refused to be a part of their children’s upbringing and stated that only weak men would walk away from the joys of being a real father.
He blamed the absence of proper male role models in the lives of many youths for the sharp rise in drug abuse, crime and school drop outs.
Himself a father, Foster challenged the honorees to be role models to every youth they reach and to play a part in the restoration of discipline, respect, honesty, good manners and hard work among youths in Rose Hall Town. The members of the cricket teams were also recognised for raising the finance and organising the luncheon under their mandated self-development programme where every cricketer from the club has to be involved in five community related programmes in the year.
Fifty-three year-old Leon Wiggins Sr. was honored as the RHTY&SC Father of the Year. Mr. Wiggins, a father of three was selected by the four junior cricket teams as a role model parent who played a major role in the development of his children.
The Father of the year is a founder member of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club and served as the club’s first treasurer from 1990 to 1995. He is also the father of Leon Jr. and Eon Wiggins who represented the Club at the junior and senior levels in cricket and basketball.
Mr. Wiggins received a Ricks & Sari hamper and a collection of gifts from the club. In a brief response, the Father of the year thanked the cricketers and the Club for honoring him. Fatherhood, he stated is the best job he ever had and disclosed that his formula for success was driven by discipline, understanding and a lot of patience.
Several fathers at the end of the programme expressed gratitude to the club for recognising them for their contributions as parents. Mr. Rohan Etwaru stated that the actions of the young cricketers showed that there are still people who cared for others while challenging them to continue the good work they are doing. The fathers were all presented with gifts.
The Club and the teams are expressing gratitude to Ricks & Sari Agro Industries Ltd, Banks DIH Ltd, Delbert Hicks, Royston Crandon, Bounty Farm Ltd, Sterling Products Ltd, F. M Hamid, Tyndall Cameron and S. Tulsi for assisting to make the activity a resounding success.
