Even though it has been confirmed that X2 will be launching their own band before year-end, and that Adrian Dutchin has opted out of the Kross Fyah Band, at least one Guyanese remains locked into his Caribbean music connection.
Jumo Primo has confirmed that he is still very much a frontline member of the ‘Byron Lee’s Dragonnaires’ outfit— touring and performing internationally.
While the members remain the same, it’s no longer the Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires band. “The vibes are the same and at times even hotter but we are humbly asking to be called by our new name so Call us Byron Lee’s Dragonnaires,” said Primo during a recent interview on the Caribbean Music Box programme aired on BTV Ch2.
He said that the band has a new management team and admits too that they will have to step up the marketing campaign to ensure that persons know that the band has not disbanded.
No need to worry fans of the now retired name: if all goes well in November, Guyana may be in for yet another serving of entertainment vibes that can only be delivered by the Dragonnaires’ clan.
“A lot of people think that after Uncle Byron died the band died too but that’s not true. The band is still alive and playing… and we could still Mash up the place,” Jumo said.
Explaining the move, Jumo noted that while the band’s patriarch has passed on, the Dragonnaires are still a very close knitted Caribbean family.
In an effort to keep his memory alive the band has been renamed to show that “we respect his sacrifices and dedication to keep the Caribbean sound alive in the ever evolving entertainment industry and we are products of his commitment to the music industry.”
Jumo recently returned from Jamaica where the band performed for the opening of a mega hotel and from all reports the event was another scorcher.
Sharing his story with the Caribbean Music Box programme fans, he said, “Under the new name and new management the band is still taking and honouring bookings the world over.”
Jumo left Guyana for Washington DC to be among the entertainers at the Washington Carnival where he and Adrian Dutchin are carded to dish the real hot soca and Guyanese vibes to members of the Diaspora.
Then it’s off on tour with ‘Byron Lee’s Dragonnaires’ to Europe then to Canada for Caribana for three weeks, then St Kitts, St Croix and Antigua during the July August period.
He as well as Adrian and Terry Gagraj recently dished the Guyanese musical flavours at events as part of the Atlanta Carnival offerings for 2010.
On a personal note he said his gyrations are natural as a descendant of Africans and that when he’s not on stage he’s a very approachable person. He said too that his ultimate goal as an entertainer when on stage “is to please and tease fans… especially the ladies”.
More from Jumo in the next edition of Entertainer when he’ll talk about marriage and the formation of the X2 and the Heat Wave.
