The rapid development of Berbice Cricket continued on Wednesday last with the launching of the 2nd Annual Berbice Cricket Board / Bank of Nova Scotia Cricket Academy and the historic Cellink Coaching DVD for young cricketers.
The launching ceremony took place at the Berbice Cricket Board office, Cheddi Jagan Street, New Amsterdam and was attended by cricket officials and representatives of Scotia Bank and Cellink.
Chairman of the Boards’ Special Events Committee and Public Relations Officer Hilbert Foster, at the presentation noted that the Board was passionate about the development of Cricket and over the last two years has completed over 100 projects and programmes.
Foster announced that the Academy would be held from the July 26 to 31 at the Albion Sports Complex.
A total of 55 young cricketers chosen after a series of coaching clinics will attend the clinics under the guidance of four coaches – Winston Smith, Julian Moore, Delbert Hicks and Renwick Batson.
The main aims of the Academy is to identify and correct technical faults of the players, to assist in their development as sports ambassadors and to instill in them the importance of representing Berbice and Guyana.
Foster also stated that the Board was quite confident that like last year when several talented players were developed, this year’s Academy will also be successful and fulfill all its objectives.
The historic Coaching DVD was also officially launched as part of the Berbice Cricket Board’s development programme.
The DVD would be produced by the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club; the Special Events Committee of the Board and would be filmed and edited by Matrix Video Production headed by Christopher Holder.
It would be 75 minutes with 40 minutes dedicated to coaching on the basics in batting, bowling, fielding and wicketkeeping. A special segment would also be done on the Importance of Physical Fitness (6 minutes), Importance of Education and Personal Discipline (3 minutes), Role of a Sports Ambassador (3 minutes) and Umpire’s signals (5 minutes).
Filming of the DVD has already started under the guidance of coaches Adrian Amsterdam, Albert Smith, Julian Moore and Winston Smith and would continue on Sunday at the Albion Community Centre Cricket Ground.
The BCB has identified several Berbice senior players to be involved in the production of the DVD and they include Sewnarine Chattergoon, Homchand Pooran, Royston Crandon, Devendra Bishoo and Delbert Hicks.
Foster also disclosed that the DVD would be distributed to all clubs in Berbice and members of the Berbice Cricket Board’s junior elite coaching programme with the main aim is to get young cricketers to work more on the game at home or as a group at their clubs.
Board Treasurer Anil Beharry hailed the launching of both projects as another milestone in the history of Berbice Cricket while stating that cricket in Berbice was on the rise because the current administration was deeply committed and interested in the development of the game.
President Keith Foster disclosed that his Board was investing heavily in the development of youths because they are the future and because the County wants to completely dominate youth cricket in Guyana for the next decade.
He called on every club and cricketer in Berbice to work together with the Board to make sure that the level of cricket continues to rise.
Representative of Cellink (Berbice Operations) Mr. James Cummings and Ms. Denise Bachan of Scotia Bank both wished the Berbice Cricket Board continued success in its drive to lift the standard in the County.
Long serving cricket Administrator Carl Moore expressed his pleasure at the launching of both programmes saying that they would play major roles in assisting the development of young cricketers; noting that every cricketer in Guyana has technical problems, Moore stated that the Academy would assist to identify the problems and correct them.
Mr. Cummings expressed his Company’s pleasure to be associated with the historic Berbice Cricket DVD stating that Cellink was confident that it would play major roles in the development of new talents for Guyana and the West Indies.
Ms. Bachan urged the young players to take full advantage of the opportunity of attending the Academy and expressed confidence that it would play a major role in molding positive character in every player. She stated that Scotia Bank was quite passionate about the development of Kiddies and West Indies Cricket and views this investment as part of this drive.
Meanwhile, the BCB has announced the names of the junior players who would be members of the Academy.
