World Bank sees reports from int’l institutions as credible – Valentini

Giorgio Valentini, the World Bank’s Country Representative for Suriname and Guyana says that the entity sees as credible, reports from international institutions.
Valentini was yesterday asked the question specifically as it relates to the United States State Department’s 2010 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report which Human Services and Social Security Minister Priya Manickchand has dismissed as “crap.”
Valentini did say that they are not currently doing any social work in Guyana and as such the TIP report was not an issue.
He did state that as it relates to any possible sanctions as a result of Guyana’s ranking on the TIP report, it will ultimately be the United States that will have to ask either the IMF or the World Bank to impose any suspensions, but to the best of his knowledge, there have been no such communications.
When asked about the Transparency International and Amnesty International reports and if there was any skepticism about dealing with Guyana as a result of the negative picture painted by those reports, he said there was none.
Valentini said that the World Bank wants to be partners with countries such as Guyana to help to ensure that there is value for money in their economic development and governance mechanism, among other undertakings.
He said that the World Bank is not there as a critic but rather a partner.
The United States, through its Ambassador at Large Luis C De Baca, said that it has no apology to offer Guyana and would not be withdrawing its findings on trafficking in persons here.
The 2010 report named Guyana as a source country for men, women, and children subjected to trafficking in persons, specifically conditions of forced prostitution and forced labour.
De Baca said the report was prepared after talks with government officials, the international community, non-governmental organizations, civil society and churches.
Amnesty International and Transparency International have also painted Guyana in extremely negative spotlight but the ruling administration has dismissed them.
