Turkeyen campus initiates “Donate a Tree Project”

The quality of the environment in which people live and work has an important bearing on their spirit, productivity, and the way they see life.
This was noted yesterday by a patron of the project, Pamela Bourne, at the launching of the “Donate a Tree Project” outside the Education Lecture Theatre at the University of Guyana’s Turkeyen campus.
Bourne disclosed that the idea of seeking to improve the physical appearance of the campus by enhancing the beauty of its landscape, would appeal to many persons who, in one way or the other, are interested in the development of the University.
She said the responses have been impressive with generous contributions from business enterprises, alumni, former members of staff and other individuals in their own right in Guyana, the Caribbean and outside the region including Canada, the U.K. and the U.S.
In giving credit and thanking donors who have given generously, Mrs. Bourne said success would not have been possible without the committed effort of the committee comprising: Mrs. Yvonne Stephenson, Dr. Marlene Cox, Mrs. Lorene Grant, Mrs. Elsie Croal, Mr. Kenneth Bovell, Mrs. Lystra, Fletcher-Paul, Mr. Charles Nelson, Ms. Sumedha Mahadeo, Mr. James Singh, Ms. Yolanda Vasconcellos, Mr. Ronald Rajnarine, Dr. Theodosius Velloza, and Mrs. Indra Chandarpal
She also acknowledged the support of the University in handling the financial matters.
Bourne said that trees are symbolic of life itself – the need for a beginning, the need for nurturing, care, patience and the willingness to provide for posterity and future generations. “Trees in most cases outlast those who plant them and through this project a commitment is made to those who come after us.”
She further noted that the project serves as a signal of what can be achieved and may encourage fundraisers for the benefit of other projects. “People want to help. Giving is a good feeling.”
