Dear Editor,
Something screwy is going on here. Since the year 2003 paddy shells have been dumped and burned at Strath-Avon, Cane Grove by a rice miller from the area.
Letters were sent to the NDC, Cane Grove, The Regional Office (Region Four), EPA, and the Ministry of Health. Several calls were made to the Guyana Rice Development Board, the EPA and the Ministry of Agriculture. To date nothing has been done.
Heaps of paddy shells can be seen. The dust, smoke and stench cause a lot of discomfort to residents of the area. The well being of adults and children alike is also at risk.
The dump site has no drainage out-lets so when it rains the water accumulate and flood the land of other residents, damaging their farm produce in the process.
We the residents would like to know why the aforementioned agencies are reluctant to look into this problem, which poses an ongoing health risk. We are calling on those in authority to investigate this problem.
