– Kumar heads Review Committee
The best secondary school and the best primary school in sports categories will soon become part of the National Sport Commission (NSC) National Award structure when the two new groups are introduced following a review of the annual award system.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony recently revealed that Director of Sport Neil Kumar is heading a Committee appointed to review the NSC award system, and will include the new categories to emphasise the importance of sport in schools.
“I just want to make a point because we are serious about schools getting involved in sports, Kumar heads a Committee right now that is reviewing the National Sports Awards, and we will be introducing two new sports awards,” Anthony informed.
“The best secondary school in sports will be receiving a National Award every year and the best primary school in sports. We hope that you will help us to identify the schools when we set up a criterion,” he continued in an address at the National Stadium.
The Minister was speaking at the launch of the National Schools’ Athletics, Cycling and Swimming Championships where he also urged Head Teachers to stop “trivialising” the importance of sports in their respective schools.
He said that the teachers have to help his ministry identify the respective schools that will be eligible for the awards when the criterion is distributed to them following Kumar’s review.
In addition, Anthony said that they want to introduce a ranking system for both secondary and primary schools involved in sports. The Minister indicated that he has already spoken to the Education Ministry about these initiatives. (Edison Jefford)
