The sterling performances of the boxers from the Port Kaituma Boxing Gym in recent tournaments have been observed by the Minister of Culture Youth and Sports, Dr. Frank Anthony who in turn has donated a set of boxing equipment to the coach of that institution, Mr. Shem Cuffy.
The equipment consists of boxing boots, gloves and striking pads among others. The Minister expressed satisfaction at the strides made by the pugilists from the Barima/Waini Region and disclosed that the performances of the boxers at the Novices and Intermediate Boxing Championships were noteworthy and served as the catalyst for the intervention of his Ministry.
Dr. Anthony noted that the hinterland region abounds with talent even as he vowed to continue supporting.
He promised to facilitate a visit of the national coach, Wencel Thomas to the Region One gym to assist in honing the skills of the lads and lasses there.
He further pointed out that his Ministry’s efforts to promote the sport have led to the donation of a new boxing ring to the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA). He said that the ring would be used in all GABA organized tournament including the inaugural Inter-Gym tournament scheduled for Berbice sometime next month.
Mr. Cuffy heartily expressed gratitude to the Minister for his intervention. He assured the Minister that the gears would go a far way towards the boxers’ development.
The Port Kaituma Boxing Gym was only recently inaugurated into the boxing family and has already created a favourable impression after producing 2 champions and a runner-up in the just concluded Intermediate Boxing Championships.
The boxers that were at the function are bantamweight Benjamin Henry, junior/welterweight Mark Anthony George, lightweight Jim O’Selmo, female featherweight Vanessa Robinson and light/welterweight Samantha Benjamin.
