Thirty-two-year-old Sherwin Younge, of West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, was not required to plead to the indictable offence of murder yesterday when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
Younge who is a mute, is accused of killing Godfrey Hoyte called “Bruck up” on June 20 at the Staborek Market Square.
A sign language interpreter was yesterday made available, following which Younge explained that he was merely acting in self-defence.
He alleges that he was constantly taunted by Hoyte. The man said that Hoyte was always in the habit of pulling at him whenever he saw him. He explained that on the day in question he was at the market with two friends who are deaf.
He further claimed that Hoyte broke a glass bottle and advanced towards him. Younge showed the magistrate a wound to his right leg, which was allegedly inflicted by Hoyte.
He then told the magistrate that it was a friend who handed him a knife and he only stabbed Hoyte once.
The police subsequently arrived on the scene and he was taken into custody. The magistrate remanded the accused and he is expected to make another court appearance on July 2.
