Following concerns raised by the loggers on some burning issues in the industry, including the renewal of Timber Sales Agreement (TSAs), Government has ordered its regulatory arm, the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC), to meet more with the operators.
A key meeting is scheduled for July to iron out some of the difficulties facing members of the Forest Products Association (FPA), it was disclosed Wednesday.
The Ministry of Agriculture and the FPA, in a joint statement, said that the senior officials of the association, Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, and GFC’s Commissioner, James Singh, met last Friday at the Ministry.
It was revealed that in February, a meeting was held between the parties and Minister Persaud had committed to more “constructive dialogue” to move the industry forward.
The FPA, at last Friday’s meeting raised a number of issues affecting logging operation, “current and past, including the renewal of Timber Sales Agreement, parts of the Code of Practice and the 10 meter rule, amongst others.”
According to the joint statement, a number of other complaints were highlighted for future discussions.
“At the end of the meeting the FPA expressed some satisfaction with the decision taken by the Minister to address areas of immediate concern. All parties, however, agreed that some issues needed additional clarification and discussion, so that timely action could be taken to address them.”
These very issues, the statement continued, will be on the agenda for the July meeting.
“The Minister also mandated the GFC to follow up on regular meetings between the FPA, Guyana Manufacturers and Services Association and the GFC to improve relationships through the Ministerial Committee which was established since 2007.” The parties stressed that they are committed to the forestry sector developing and realizing its full potential even more.
