Cricket fans were treated to several exciting matches when play continued in the Carib Beer National Softball Cricket Tournament played over the past weekend and organized by the Guyana Softball League, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport at venues countrywide.
In an action packed encounter, Farm Masjid defeated Speed Boat XI by 55 runs after the former team won the toss and batted scoring a huge 175-6 in their 15 overs. Rawley Price posted an unbeaten half century (61) that included 7 sixes and 2 fours off only 17 balls. He received support from Sanjay Singh, who lashed an unbeaten 28.
These two batsmen came together when their team was struggling at 95-5 in the ninth over and between them lashed a quick-fire 80 in the last 6 overs. Khemraj Persaud bowled three overs and took one wicket for 22 runs to top the bowling averages for Speedboat XI.
Speedboat XI started their innings at a rapid pace, rattling up 40 without loss in 7 overs before Abdool Sadiek (3-14) and Anand Ali (3-18) contrived to restrict them to 120-3 in 13.4 overs.
Farm Masjid XI returned later in the day to notch up a second victory, this time against Diamond Superstars by 13 runs. The former team won the toss and batted scoring 161-9 in their 15 overs with opening Batsman Abdool Sadiek top scoring with 35. Anand Ali supported with a valuable contribution of 20. In reply, Diamond Superstars XI was restricted to 148-9 in their 15 overs. Gray McKinnon lashed an unbeaten half century (57) which in the end proved to be inadequate.
Rawley Price (6-14 from 3 overs) contrived with Anand Ali (3-18 from 3 overs) to deny Diamond Superstars. Farm Masjid will now move on to the National Quarter finals along with the respective winners from Georgetown (Regal XI), Essequibo (United Brothers XI), West Demerara (Wolf Warriors) and Linden (Uprising XI) to compete in the National Quarter finals.
The matches in the East coast, Berbice and Wakenaam zones are still being competed. At their conclusion, the fixtures for the quarters-finals would be announced.
