The time for talking is over and the boxers contesting for fistic acclamation in the fifth edition of the ProAm Boxing card under the auspices of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports, the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association and the National Communications Network, will now have to put up or shut up.
Margaret ‘Chico’ Walcott has been especially garrulous and has promised to deal with Mandessa Moses in their four rounds scrap. The latter fighter has made no bones about the fact that she is out to win her bout as convincingly as ever. What the pundits have interpreted this to mean is that ‘Chico’ will be chewed to the pulp. Walcott has scoffed at these remarks and has promised to teach Moses a thing or two about the intricacies of the fistic sport.
One thing is for sure, Moses punches like the kick of a horse. Don’t believe me? Ask Alicia Marques, that is, if you can find her. The North West fighter had developed the gumption to match gloves with Moses and almost paid for her folly with her life. An unforgettable left hook almost decapitated her and it seems as though she has hung up her gloves. At least no one has been able to find her nor is she going to the gym.
Walcott is a different kettle of fish. It is true that she has an unflattering record but one cannot totally ignore the quality of opponents that she has fought. She has matched skills with Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil, Sharon Ward, Geraldine Cox and Pauline London among others. While she has lost many of those bouts, Walcott would have accrued some valuable experience.
Moses’ career, on the contrary, is just three fights old but her ambition and wealth of talent is immense. She packs a punch and from all indications, is not afraid to use it. The fight may very well boil down to who wants it bad enough.
Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes has roared but Anthony Augustin refuses to baulk. This may not be a good stance when one remembers that the last time Gilkes emitted such a sound from his throat, Theophilus King ended up badly mauled.
Since then Gilkes’ confidence has improved ten fold. He would do well to take heed that Augustin, even though he lost to Mitchell Rogers in his debut fight, had managed to stitch in a few punches that had left the muscular heavyweight in pains long after the final bell had rung. This will be a wring down, brawling affair and no one should be surprised if one of the two boxers is eliminated before the final bell.
The night’s activities commences with Wilmot Hutson, who suffered a loss to Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry two cards ago, squaring off with Orlan ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers, another Dharry victim. If Rogers lands one of those ‘Rockets’ he has in his ‘Pockets’ Hutson may be in a lot of trouble.
However, the latter pugilist, who commenced his career with a loss to Dharry, would be anxious to overturn his fortunes. If he comes ready for a war the fans would be the ones to benefit the most.
The final professional bout will bring together Clive Atwell, who commenced his professional career with a sound thrashing of Carlton Skeete, matching gloves with Mark Austin, another debutant, in the night’s curtain raiser.
This is his debut fight and Austin is yet to make his mark on the professional scene but already he has perfected the art of bragging, a major weapon in a boxers’ arsenal. He will soon learn that walking the walk as you have talked the talk are too different propositions. Those unable to visit the venue may tune in to NCN Television for a blow by blow recording of the proceedings. Bell time is 20:00hrs.
