As the preliminary inquiry into the carnal knowledge case against embattled television station owner Chandra Narine Sharma continues, the matter was once again adjourned after the prosecution and defence both made legal submissions.
Sharma is accused of having carnal knowledge of a 13 year old girl. The state is being represented by Senior Counsel Doodnauth Singh. The preliminary inquiry is presently being heard before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Sharma’s lawyers, Vic Puran and Nigel Hughes, did not discuss the case yesterday after it was adjourned.
Kaieteur News understands that the young girl could not continue giving any evidence yesterday after she complained of feeling unwell. On Monday, the teen began to give evidence in chief about the alleged abused she suffered at the hands of Sharma.
The matter has been adjourned until July 20.
On the last occasion the lawyers had made an application for certified copies of Sharma’s passport to be made available to the defence.
The lawyers were contending that Sharma was not in the country when some of the “acts” were allegedly committed.
However the Director of Public Prosecutions Shalimar Ali Hack, in a letter to the press, opined that Sharma had wanted the passport to travel aboard.
Sharma’s lawyers later denied the claim made by the prosecutor, saying that Sharma had no desire of travelling aboard.
The Justice for All Party Leader yesterday again complained of feeling unwell. The man said that the entire situation was becoming very frustrating.
Sharma said that although his health continues to deteriorate, he was still making the effort to attend court.
He further disclosed that his doctors had advised him that he needs to relax because his heart rate continues to increase.
He also said that he might have to do a minor surgery, but could not specify whether it would be done locally or aboard. Sharma is currently on $2M bail for the carnal knowledge charge.
Meanwhile the tampering with witness charge against Sharma is expected to finally commence on Friday, before Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond.
Sharma, his son-in-law Ravi Mangar, Tyrone Ali, Mark Reid, Raywattie Ramsaywack and Doodnauth were all charged with obstruction of justice.
The natter has been stalled because the prosecution has not come forward with any evidence in the matter.
Lawyers for the persons charged have continuously asked the magistrate to dismiss the case.
On Monday, the state appointed Special Prosecutor Sanjeev Datadin to prosecute the matter. He asked for an extension so that he could properly prepare his case.
