National Coach/player Theodore Henry speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday shortly before spearheading a light practice session at the National Park informed that the squad is currently into the final stages of preparations for the upcoming CAC Tournament which will be held on July 24-25 at the National Stadium.
This tournament is expected to be followed immediately after with the staging of the NACRA Sevens Championship with Guyana being the defending champions for the past four years.
Henry, who is in charge of the squad’s preparations in the absence of Technical Director Joe Whipple, said that the players are into the game plays and tactical skills phases and the coaching staff is extremely satisfied with the progress they’ve seen so far.
“We’re pretty satisfied with the progress seen so far and we are well on our way to getting into the type of form that will make it difficult for opposing teams to beat us,” Henry confidently remarked.
He added that everyone has remained injury free so far and according to him that is due mainly to the rigorous preparations they’ve undergone over the past two months.
“We’ve done a lot of gym work and that has been responsible for the players being much stronger which has aided in helping to keep us free from injuries,” Henry said.
As a mark of testimony to the level of fitness within the team, Henry informed that all the players have managed to pass the Beep Test, while the fact that they came out of two weekends of trial games without anyone being injured also support the importance of the gym work that was done.
He disclosed that with the addition of the three remaining overseas based players in Albert LaRose, Rupert Giles and Dominic Lespierre, he expects Guyana to be very strong and competitive and the team to beat.
Henry also revealed that Trinidad and Tobago based Richard Staglon and Ronald Mayers have returned to the Twin Island, but are still expected to continue their training whilst playing competitively.
“All in all we’re pretty much pleased with the team’s progress and there are no excuses to be made.”
He urged all Guyanese to come out in their numbers to support the national team as they seek to first win the CAC title and then successfully defend their regional crown.
