The sun came out in all its glory allowing play in the third Essequibo Islands Ten10 Softball cricket competition to resume on Sunday June 13 last. A small but vocal crowd turned out to witness the matches and was treated to some exhilarating cricket.
When stumps were drawn at the end of the day’s activities, Road Warriors emerged as winners after defeating Belle Plain CC by 9 wickets in a low scoring affair. That team now moves on to play in the Wakenaam zone finals scheduled to be played on the Sunday 27 next at a venue to be announced later.
Belle Plain batted first and scored 54-9 in 10 overs with Bisham Persaud (11) hitting the most runs. Abdul Salim (2-13 from 2 overs) was the bowler that destroyed Belle Plain innings. In reply Road Warriors cruised to 56-1 in 7.1 overs with Satish Ragunauth top scoring on 29.
In the other match, Zeelandia SC defeated Cavaliers CC by 30 runs after the former team won the toss and chose to bat scoring a challenging 109-2 off their 10 overs. Nandkumar Boodram blasted an enterprising unbeaten half century (66) including 5 massive sixes.
Navishal Pooran contributed 27 as the two batsmen racked up a partnership of 48 off 30 deliveries to carry their team to their eventual score. In reply Cavaliers CC were limited to 79-8 in their 10 overs with Vickram Shivcharran returning to score 18. National U15 player, Ricardo Adams was the most successful bowler for the losers with 2-12 from 2 overs.
In action in the semi- finals, Road Warriors mauled Boyso XI by 54 runs after the former team elected to bat after winning the toss for the second time.
Oyono Sampson clobbered 56 with support from Seon Venture (29) to post a challenging 124-4 in their 10 overs. In reply Boyso XI could only post 70-8 in their 10 overs with Hassan Mohamed registering 26.
Imran Khan was in devastating form with the ball snaring 4-7 from 2 overs which included a hat trick in his last over.
In the final Road Warriors destroyed Zeelandia SC by 39 runs to be crowned champions of Wakenaam zone.
Road Warriors took first strike for the third time and rattled up 113-9 in 10 overs with Roopnarine Persaud making a disciplined 39 with support from Khemraj Gunraj (21). Ajay Gansham took 4-18 from 2 overs but all in a losing cause while Nandkumar Boodram (2-21 from his 2 overs), rendered some support.
In reply, Zeelandia SC was routed for 74-8 when their innings ended. Ricardo Adam (29) was the only batsman offering any resistance while Abdul Salim Zeelandia SC in check with a bowling display of 3-10 from 2 overs. He eventually earned the man of the match award.
Meanwhile Mr. Ron Griffith presented the prizes to the various winners and implored them to support the matches.
He pointed out that they are geared towards the development of sports. Mr. Griffith further urged the islanders to use the tournament as a unifying factor since such activities had the potential of fostering economic growth. Several corporate bodies teamed up to sponsor the tournament including Banks DIH, Western Union and Bill express Money Transfer and the Guyana National Shipping Corporation.
