If words could have killed then the morticians would have had to be called into the studios of the National Communications Network (NCN) yesterday afternoon to remove several bodies and the police would have had to make a few arrests.
Mandessa Moses would have been a casualty and Margaret ‘Chico’ Walcott would have been in police custody following scathing exchanges between the two fighters. Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers would have also been arrested following ‘threats’ to out Wilmut Hutson’s light. The latter fighter not to be outdone chimed in with scathing promises to ‘remove’ Rogers from the scene. Both fighters have one thing in common; they have both lost their last bouts to Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry. This would be the perfect opportunity for both boxers to stake a claim for a return bout against ‘The Coolie Bully.’
Whether these fighters can back their chat will be known come Friday night when the Guyana Boxing Board of Control stages another night of fistic fury in the sixth edition of the Pro/Am Boxing card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Friday night next.
Moses is a slimly built pugilist but she packs a terrific wallop. In her last bout against Alisa Marques, Moses had employed a two-fisted attack and almost decapitated Marques, on her way to a devastating knockout. Since then Marques has steered clear of the gym and rumors are that she has quit the game.
Walcott scoffed at this feat saying that Marques is not in her league. She reminded Moses of her epic battles against Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil and assured Moses that she (Moses) would have a very torrid night. Moses listened and calmly retorted, “I respect the fact that ‘Chico’ is more experienced than I but I have trained hard and am prepared for anything she has to offer.
From all indications, Walcott will come out steaming, hoping to cash in on Moses’ inexperience. Obviously the younger Moses would want to etch her mark in the local boxing annuls as being the boxer to defeat another whose experience far outweighs hers. This promises to be an intriguing match-up.
Then there is the Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes/ Anthony Augustin bout which promises lots of action. The former pugilist has had a string of losses but managed to break the jinx with a convincing win over Theophilus King in the last edition of the ProAm cards. Following that win Gilkes is brimming with confidence and is calling on all comers to bare their fists. Augustin, a tough as nails customer who packs a wicked wallop, has answered Gilkes’ call and has promised to teach him a lesson ‘for his mouth.’
Neither Clive Atwell nor Mark Austin was present at the NCN Studios but both had earlier promised to come out victorious. Atwell who commenced his professional career with a sound thrashing of Carlton Skeete would want to continue in that vein against Austin, another debutant in the night’s curtain raiser.
He has already promised to beat up Atwell as he had done when the two met in the amateur ranks. But that had been a long time ago and Atwell is no longer a tenderfoot. This card promises action galore and the only reason that fans would not want to visit the CASH to witness the action is if they are glued to their television set at home where the action will also unfold. Bell time is 20:00hrs.
