Two employees of Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL), who allegedly tried to fleece an unsuspecting customer, were each placed on $75,000 bail when they appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday.
The men Heston Grant, 36, of Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara, and Rayon Henry 25, of Lot 7 Princes Street, were both accused of demanding money by menace.
It is alleged that on June 18, the two with the intent to defraud, obtained $30,000 from Marvin Thomas using menace. They both pleaded not guilty. The men were represented by attorney at law Peter Hugh.
The lawyer in a bail application said that his clients were gainfully employed at the power company as meter technicians.
He further told the court that both defendants were placed on $20,000 station bail. The lawyer asked the court to grant bail in a reasonable sum, adding that they both had unblemished records.
The virtual complainant, Marvin Thomas, who was present in court, said that on the day in question, he received a telephone call from his neighbour saying that GPL technicians had removed the meter from his home.
The man said he immediately went home and his neighbour handed him a cell phone number which one of the defendants had left. Thomas said that he called the number and a demand of $30,000 was made by the men for the meter to be brought back.
The man said instead of giving into the men’s demands, he went to Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, and made a report.
Thomas said that he called the men on his cell phone and placed it on speaker, in the presence of several police, and made plans to meet them.
He said that police marked the money and they all went to a popular Sheriff Street bar to meet the two GPL employees.
The man said he handed the money to the men and after that the police promptly arrested them.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford did not object to bail. In his address to the court, he said that the two defendants had no right to remove the meter, since Thomas was not in arrears with the company.
“My worship this entire story leaves the prosecution to think that this might have been the defendants’ way of obtaining money from customers.”
Bail was granted and the two men were ordered to make another court appearance on August 2.
