ACDA students entertained by Hare Krishna movement

The Ratha Yatra festival now has become an annual feature in Guyana around this time of the year, and members of the faith gathered yesterday at ACDA headquarters, Thomas Lands, to begin their “food for life programme” where fruits and sweets are prepared and blessed, then shared out to the public. Students of ACDA’s Centre of Learning and Afro-centric orientation were entertained with chanting and dancing, and food was shared out to the children and teachers.
According to Erica Shortt, known as Visil Mangerie Devi Dass and a devotee of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), the day is celebrated as a fasting one, and part of the occasion deals with not using any grains for the day, only fruits, nuts and sweet.
While throughout the day, members of the organisation visited other public locations to share their celebration.
Another female devotee said that all the members of the group are from America, and they are in Guyana to celebrate the Ratha Yatra, which is called the chariot festival.
“We have come to spread the message of peace, love and understanding throughout Guyana”
She also stressed that Krishna consciousness is monotheistic.
Under the theme “Parading for peace, Ecological Harmony and Spiritual Unity” on Saturday June 26th, the Ratha Yatra chariot will roll down some of the major streets of Georgetown.
The festival was successfully transplanted since 1967 by the Hare Krishna Movement’s Founder-Acharya, Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, and now Ratha Yatra takes place on an annual basis in all major cities around the world such as London, Paris, New York, Sydney and Toronto.
