West Demerara Javelins defeated South Essequibo Storm by 4 wickets in the final preliminary round game of the blackberries zone, Digicel Summer Smash National 20/20 cricket competition played Sunday at the Wakenaam Community Centre Ground.
South Essequibo Storm batted first and scored 136-2 off their allotted 20 overs. Jason Heyliger led with 70 (6×4, 3×6) and Mark Braithwaithe supported with 46 (4×4,3×6).
West Demerara Javelins then responded with 137 – 6 in 18.3 overs. Former West Indies U-19 captain Andrea Percival top scored with 37 (2×4,1×6) while Paul Wintz contributed 26 (2×4,2×6) as Jason Heyliger and Wayne Osborne took two wickets each for the South Essequibo Storm. South Essequibo Storm, North Essequibo Bold and West Demerara Javelins have one win each form the Blackberries Essequibo zone of the competition. The top two teams from this zone, which is yet to be decided, will qualify for the super six stage.
This competition is being used to select the Guyana team for the Regional 20/20 tournament.
