Robbery/shootout at Mahdia… Bandit, victim dead
A robbery went horribly wrong when two men, one of whom was said to be the brother of a boutique owner in Mahdia, attacked another businessman in the lawless Mousie Creek landing in the Konawaruk area.
The ensuing shootout left a robber and a dredge owner dead and a third man badly wounded.
Police identified one of the dead as 35-year-old Oswald Bourne, of Block 22 Wismar, while the slain dredge owner has been identified as Devon Thomas, of Mainstay.

The survivor, who was shot in the chest, was identified as 21-year-old Clifford Andrews, of Chenapau. He also sustained injuries after being gun-butted.
He was air-dashed to the city yesterday and has been admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Mousie Creek is located some 30 miles from Mahdia. The police confirmed that there is a proliferation of illegal guns in the area.
According to reports coming out of the area, Thomas and Andrews were heading back to their camp from the landing when Bourne and an accomplice known as ‘Blacka’ ambushed them.
However, Thomas was carrying a firearm, and a gun battle broke out between the dredge owner and the robbers.
One report stated that Thomas succeeded in disarming Bourne and shooting him dead. The report also stated that Bourne’s accomplice shot and killed Thomas then turned the gun on and attacked Andrews.
After Bourne’s accomplice shot Andrews in the chest, the injured man managed to take cover and avoid further injury, while the suspect known as ‘Blacka’ fled the scene.
Kaieteur News understands that Andrews was carrying a small quantity of raw gold. However, it is unclear whether Thomas, who appeared to be the main target, had any valuables in his possession.
Andrews, who spoke briefly with Kaieteur News at the GPHC, identified ‘Blacka’ as the person who shot and gun butted him.
However, he was unable to say who shot Thomas.
Residents of the Mousie area eventually informed police about the killing. Ranks then transported the bodies to the Mahdia Hospital mortuary while Andrews was treated at the same hospital before being transferred to the GPHC.
According to sources from the area, Oswald Bourne’s brother and sister-in-law operate a small boutique at Mousie Landing.

Sources said that Bourne was suspected to have been involved in criminal activities in the community.
Yesterday, Bourne’s relatives said that he, Bourne, had been selling clothing in the area for the past two years.
They told Kaieteur news that one of his brothers, Bryan, received a call around 06:00 hrs yesterday from someone who enquired whether any of his siblings worked in the interior.
The caller then informed the brother that Oswald had been slain.
The relatives were skeptical about the information until another brother, Carl, who operates the boutique, called around 16:00 hrs to confirm that Oswald was indeed dead.
According to one relative, Bourne was shot once in the chest and about three times in the back and was also stabbed.
His relatives at Block 22, Wismar, described his killing as a murder.
Police officials told Kaieteur News that the Mousie Creek area is infested by heavily armed ‘rouges’ who roam the area especially at night.
The ‘landing’ is accessible by a bridge that was constructed by Brazilians.
Sources alleged that persons who are in collusion with the bandits would tip them off before police ranks can cross the bridge.
