Government yesterday said that it is making arrangements for a temporary parking lot for hire cars of the new schemes at Diamond/Golden Grove, East Bank of Demerara.
For the past months, the cars were shifted from the main access road to the schemes, to a location near the entrance to the Diamond Housing Area. Then the car park was again shifted to the northern side of the new Guyoil Gas Station.
However, in addition to the current deplorable state of the parking area, made worse by the rains, the car park eventually spread out to in front of the Topco Factory, Demerara Distillers Limited, where the entrance there is blocked for most of the day.
Over the weekend, the company, to clear its entrance, erected no parking signs and planted a number of posts to stop the parking at the entrance to the factory.
Drivers yesterday complained that they were forced to go there since they had nowhere else from which to operate.
Minister of Public Works and Transportation, Robeson Benn, yesterday confirmed that his Ministry is working with the drivers’ association to improve the parking facility on the northern side of the gas station.
With issues of funding, the improvements are to be done shortly, the Minister assured yesterday.
