ROSE HALL TOWN, CORENTYNE – Increased market revenue was one of the reasons that permitted the Rose Hall Town Interim Management Committee (IMC) to pay workers a five percent wage and salary increase.
Chairman Bhadenauth Somrah said this took effect from June 1, last. According to him, all aspects of the IMC showed steady improvement, especially the market department. Since 2008, this section has been progressing in terms of revenue and in 2009 it surpassed the annual target. Last year, the target was $15 million; this year the same figure is anticipated.
So far the IMC has collected 45 percent of market revenue and the Chairman is optimistic that the estimated figure would be exceeded before the end of the year. According to the Chairman, in both 2008 and 2009, workers were also paid a 50 percent bonus package.
The main bugbear for the Rose Hall Town Interim Management Committee remains poor rate and tax collection. So far, only 25 percent was collected out of an estimated $14 million. Last year only 35 percent was collected.
Somrah explained that many persons who own land and properties, which are left unoccupied, are not paying the taxes. This year, the IMC is turning to the Court to ensure defaulters honour their obligation. Already a lawyer has been consulted and plans would be put in action by September.
This year, under the $8 million Capital Work Programme, two wooden bridges at Williamsburg along with the bridge at the cemetery are to be replaced with concrete solid casts. Work is also slated for the fencing of the Area ‘H’ Ground, which would be done in phases. For road and street maintenance, all thoroughfares in the town would be dealt with.
Somrah is calling on residents to practise safe garbage disposal methods in order to preserve the aesthetics of the township.
