All members of the sports fraternity are invited
Like many of their sister associations and federations, the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association will be hosting an Olympic Day activity this Sunday from 10:00hrs to 13:00hrs at the Colgrain Pool.
According to Secretary of GASA, Dr. Karen Pilgrim, the intention is to have as much fun and participation as possible in the commemoration of Olympic Day; the activity is open to all members of the sports fraternity and not just swimming.
Weightlifting, Rugby, Karate and Athletics have all held activities to date with cycling set to host a programme for BMX riders on Saturday at the National Park.
GASA participated in the Athletics Association of Guyana Olympic Day Walk/Run/Jog on Sunday and the Swimming Association is looking forward to the participation of some Track & Field athletes and officials at their event on Sunday.
Among the activities will be Water Polo; Novelty Relays (Body-board Relay, Pajama Relay, Lime & Spoon Relay, Ping-pong Ball Relay – blow the ball across the pool, “Stuff it or Wear it” Relay); Mini Water Polo ( 5 minutes in each age-group) and a T-10 Swim – This will be an event for the seasoned swimmers. Each swimmer will try to see how many laps they can complete in ten (10) minutes.
GASA will also use Sunday’s activity to host a Fish Fry as they continue their fund raising drive for Goodwill 2010 set for neighboring Suriname in mid August.
Olympic Day is a worldwide commemoration of the birth of the modern Olympic Games. On June 23, 1894, Baron Pierre de Coubertin convened the first International Olympic Committee meeting at the Sorbonne in Paris. Olympic Day is held annually in more than 160 countries.
