Shivnarine Chanderpaul fell 34 runs short of becoming the 10th West Indian to score two Test double centuries but the length of his innings and his 100-run 5th wicket stand with Dwayne Bravo (53) yesterday left South Africa with no hope of winning the 2nd Digicel Test at Warner Park in St Kitts heading into today’s final day.
By the close of the truncated day’s play, South Africa, who made 543-6 declared in their first innings, were 23-0 in their second, after the hosts were bowled out with 13 overs left in the day for 546; giving them a three-run first innings lead.
The only previous Test here produced 1,413 runs and 30 wickets as West Indies and India played to a draw four years ago. With a day to go in this contest, 1,112 runs have already been scored for the loss of 16 wickets.
Chanderpaul extended his overnight 151 to 166 from 357 balls before he was caught and bowled at 471-5 by left-arm spinner Paul Harris, 40 minutes after Lunch.
And although Denish Ramdin’s poor run with the bat continued when he cut left-arm pacer Lonwabo Tsotsobe to point 5 runs later, and two more wickets, including Bravo, fell at 486, Chanderpaul, Bravo and rain, ensured that with more rain forecast for today, West Indies’ job of breaking the visitors 8-match winning streak in the Caribbean, is almost completed.
West Indies scored just 78 runs in almost four hours in the first two sessions and their batting yesterday was as exciting as watching paint dry. However, it was a wonderful exhibition of grit, determination and level-headed commitment from a team generally lacking those qualities.
West Indies, aided by a 25-minute stoppage half-way through the first session, survived the first session without losing a wicket to reach 463-4 by lunch from their overnight 424-4. Chanderpaul, the 35-year-old veteran of 16 years of International cricket took his overnight score of 151 to 163 by the interval while Bravo, who began the penultimate day on 21, was unbeaten on 44.
Bravo hit a couple of boundaries early in the session before he buckled down to preserving his wicket by using his pad as a defensive tactic against Harris, who again never looked threatening. Chanderpaul, 37 short of becoming the 10th West Indian to score 2 double Test centuries, revels in these situations. With batting out time just as important as scoring runs to prevent an unlikely defeat on a pitch tailor-made for batting, the left-hander was well set to extend his 21st Test ton to something really big.
Bravo also showed wonderful commitment to the cause of occupying the crease as the South Africa lead was cut to 80 by Lunch.
After the interval Chanderpaul, who averages just over 49 from 125 Tests, looked rock solid in overcast conditions while Harris continued to bowl a negative line outside Bravo’s leg-stump as the batsman was content to kick the ball away before posting his 12th Test fifty.
Chanderpaul revels in situations where occupation of the crease is more important than quick runs but it must have been a lot harder for the usually enterprising Bravo to follow the defensive script to bat his team to safety.
Harris eventually ended Chanderpaul’s vigil before Ramdin departed but the demise of Bravo (caught behind off Harris) and Shillingford (taken at slip off Jacque Kallis) as West Indies slumped to 486-8, emphasized the importance of Chanderpaul’s defiant innings.
Benn was dropped at slip off Kallis on two just before tea which was taken with the hosts on 502-8. Benn was on 10 and Ravi Rampaul on 5 and very few among the small crowd were probably still awake since just 39 runs were scored in the 120 minutes between Lunch and Tea.
A heavy shower during the Tea break delayed the start of the finals session by 90 minutes to further frustrate the South Africans.
The new ball was taken and Benn and Rampaul threw their bats at Steyn and Morkel to add 59 for the 9th wicket in the most entertaining period of play yesterday.
Mark Boucher became the first Keeper to claim 500 Test dismissals when Rampaul (31) edged Morkel. Without addition to the score, Morkel, who finished with 4-116, wrapped up the innings when he removed Benn. Scores: West Indies 546 (Chanderpaul 166, Bravo 53) trail South Africa 543 for 6 dec and 23 for 0 by 20 runs.
