The Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association (GAWA) yesterday held an exhibition outside Demico House on Croal Street in observance of Olympic Day 2010 which will be observed today, worldwide.
Guyana is one of over 200 countries that will be holding various activities to commemorate Olympic Day which was introduced in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on 23 June 1894 at the Sorbonne in Paris. The goal is to promote participation in sport across the globe regardless of age, gender or athletic ability.
Multiple national champion Sean Cozier was among the persons who were on show as the athletes demonstrated the art of the sport to the many onlookers some of whom mustered the courage to try some of the lifts for themselves.
GAWA Secretary Deion Nurse said they were very happy to share with the public the fine arts of the sport and noted that many other disciplines in Guyana including Rugby, Athletics and Karate will also be hosting activities to observe the day.
GAWA also took the opportunity to use the new weights they received as a gift from President of the Pan American Weightlifting Federation William Ozuna who visited Guyana last year and promised the donation. The Ministry of Sport afforded the association the necessary tax waivers to clear the set of weights, 185 kilos.
Nurse expressed gratitude to Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony for the Ministry’s continued support.
President of the Guyana Olympic Association K.A Juman Yassin graced yesterday’s activity with his presence.
Over the last 20 years Olympic Day has been associated with Olympic Day Runs all over the world. From 45 participating National Olympic Committees (NOCs) in the first edition in 1987, the numbers have grown to nearly 200 participating NOCs. What’s more, many of the participating NOCs are in Africa – proving the event’s worldwide appeal.
Olympic Day is nowadays developing into much more than just a sports event. Based on the three pillars “move”, “learn” and “discover”, National Olympic Committees are deploying sports, cultural and educational activities.
Some countries have incorporated the event into the school curriculum and, in recent years, many NOCs have added concerts and exhibitions to the celebration. Recent NOC activities have included meetings for children and young people with top athletes and the development of new web sites directing people to programmes in their neighbourhood.
