A massive search and rescue operation by the Coast Guard and Maritime Department has been launched after a fishing trawler exploded in Region One, Essequibo, leaving the captain missing.
Four of his crewmembers sustained massive burns to their bodies and were rescued by a Venezuelan vessel. Missing is Captain Delbert Williams, of Virginia, Cane Grove, Mahaica.
Kaieteur News was told that the vessel, Captain Lloyd 97, registered to Prittipaul Singh Investments at Providence, left on Thursday, for a fishing trip to North West, Region One, Barima/Waini.
Company representatives along with Coast Guard ranks, after learning about the incident, were flown in quickly to conduct a flyover.
Kaieteur News understands that the chartered Air Services plane flew over an area of several hundred square miles of open water in Barima/Waini area but there were no signs of the damaged vessel or the captain.
An official close to the search operations yesterday also said that when the explosion occurred, the four crewmembers jumped overboard and were rescued by a Venezuelan vessel in the area at the time.
The four crewmembers were reportedly placed on a boat belonging to the fishing company and are enroute to the city, the official said.
The phones rang out at Prittipaul Singh throughout the afternoon and there were no statements from the company as at press time.
Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn, yesterday, said that Maritime officials were also involved in the search for the missing Captain.
When Kaieteur News visited Williams’s home yesterday afternoon, relatives were tightlipped and refused to say anything.
One relative told Kaieteur News that representatives from the major seafood company had advised them not to speak to the media.
The relative further told Kaieteur News that the representatives told them that Williams was being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture, in a press statement, said that Minister Robert Persaud has ordered a full investigation.
The statement said that the Minister has sought the assistance of the Coast Guard and the Maritime Administration Department to engage in search and rescue efforts for the crewmembers.
