The St. John’s Association of Guyana will begin this year’s observance of St. John’s Week with a Church Service at St. George’s Cathedral this morning. A parade of military and paramilitary groups will follow the service.
The week of activities will climax with a graduation exercise of 80 students on Saturday June 26. They will receive their certificates in First Aid and Home Nursing Courses.
The annual event will also include a series of programmes aimed at publicising the organisation and its work, and to encourage persons to participate in Health Programmes.
Radio and television programmes will feature members of the organisation.
During the week, members of the St. John Brigade will volunteer at Elderly Homes around the city to offer as much comfort and assistance as they can to inmates. The Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre and the Red Cross Convalescent Home will also be included.
An outreach programme has been planned for Wednesday at William Fogarty’s Store. There, the public will be offered Blood Pressure and random Blood Sugar Testing, as well as being offered practical demonstrations on First Aid.
The St. John Association of Guyana was established in 1933, under the leadership of the late Dr. L.H. Wharton and the Brigade which is the Para-Military and was formed in 1952, with Sir Frank Holder as Commissioner.
Earlier this year, through the Head Office in London, funds were obtained from the German Foreign Office, Johanniter, in Berlin to train Guyanese of all walks of life in Disaster Preparedness/a Taste of First Aid.
These courses are being presented without charge and so far 1400 persons have been successfully trained, including professionals, teachers, students, parents, scouts, business organisations and other groups. These courses were conducted in Regions Three, Four, Five, Six, and Ten. The training continues.
The Association has committed to continue through its training programmes, to contribute to saving lives and supporting health care in Guyana under its motto “For the Faith and in the Service of Humanity”
