South Essequibo Storm and North Essequibo Bold recorded victories as play in the Digicel Summer Smash twenty/20 national cricket competition got underway in the Essequibo Blackberries Zone yesterday at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground with two matches.
In the first game, South Storm defeated North Bold by 26 runs. South Storm won the toss and batted after the game was reduced to 15 overs due to rain and scored 115-5 off their allotted overs. Opener Mark Braithwaithe top scored with 70 (4×4,6×6) and shared in an entertaining opening stand of 37 with Wayne Osborne (12). Ravi Seenarine was the best scorer with 15 as offspinner Vishwanauth Lall took 2-23 and left arm spinner Herry Green 2-22.
North Bold in reply made 89-9 in 15 overs. Dellon Heyliger led with 26 (2×4,2×6) while Norman Federicks supported with 21. Former national U-15 pacer Oyono Sampson grabbed 3-8 off 3 overs while Andrew Williams and Robert Moore picked up two wickets each for 16 and 10 runs respectively for the winners.
In the second match which was reduced to 18 overs, North Essequibo Bold overcame West Demerara Javelins by 10 runs. North Bold won the toss and took first strike and managed 127-9 in 18 overs. Former national U-19 player Norman Federicks stroked 55 (3×4,2×60 while Royston Alkins made 12. Bowling for West Demerara Javelins national player Gajanand Singh bagged 3-22 off 3 overs while Orin Forde took 2-19.
The West Demerara Javelins responded with 117-8 in their allotted overs. Former West Indies U-19 captain Andrea Percival scored 34 (3×6,1×4) while Chabiraj Ramcharran and Andrew Lyght Jnr. made 18 apiece as Vishwanauth Lall and Royan Federicks grabbed three wickets each for the victors.
The competition continues today with South Essequibo Storm facing West Demerara Javelins at the same venue. The top two teams from this zone will go through to the super six stage. Yesterday’s matches were fixed for the Anna Regina Centre Ground but were switched to Wakenaam because of heavy overnight showers. (Zaheer Mohamed)
