Castrol Strikers in collaboration with the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) will be hosting the Tradewind Tankers / Guyana True Champions Tournament from July 17-September 18, at three venues.
According to a release from the Organisers, the tournament will be the first of its kind to be staged in Guyana and with participation expected from Linden, Berbice, Georgetown and West Demerara it should provide a major impetus for the development of the sport.
The tournament is expected to be run over three months and games will be played at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), West Demerara and Berbice two weekends in each month.
The first month is open to all teams including females who’re interested in participating, while the second month will see the top six teams engage each other for a place in the semi-finals and final which will take place in the final month.
The release further stated that the format to be used is anticipated to provide the opportunity for teams to prove their all round strength and ability, to get more persons involved in playing the sport, the use of the aggregate points system will ensure that even losing teams have a stake in their teams overall outcome, the use of different venues should provide the necessary exposure the sport both in terms of playing conditions and the promotion of the game in different locations etc.
The three formats to be used are the 2s, 4s and 6s and teams will need a minimum of seven players.
The first two months the winners and second placed finishers will receive $20,000 and $10,000 respectively, while the overall champion will take away a top prize of $80,000, runners-up $40,000 and third place $20,000.
The dates for play are as follows: July 17&24 CASH and Goed Fortuin; August 14&28 Berbice and September 11 &18 CASH.
