Dear Editor,
“It is fundamentally undemocratic for a government to rule consecutively for decades”.
This was one of the impassioned arguments put forth by the PPP while in the wilderness of the opposition. Such long term governments, they argued are no longer motivated by service to their citizens and inevitably evolve into authoritarian regimes.
This was the belief held by the PPP regime prior to 1992 as they lobbied every international agency that would give them an audience, including the Carter Center.
Fast forward to 2010 and we see the regime that once denounced long term seated governments as undemocratic; doing unspeakable things to hold on to permanent political power. Unspeakable because even though they can be factually corroborated, if mentioned, the news media for genuine fear of reprisal would never publish them.
I suppose the party’s rebuttal would be that they are democratically elected, but interestingly enough the Chinese government from whom they pattern their ideology has the same argument.
