The PNCR said, yesterday, that perhaps the time has come “for the Opposition parties to make the PPPC fears not only a nightmare, but a reality.”
That was at the party’s weekly press briefing as the party addressed what was being reported as a ‘secret’ meeting of the opposition parties earlier this week. The PNCR statement called “the obvious paranoia of the possibility of political parties working together in an Alliance” a sign of the PPPC entering a ‘panic mode’ as the party sees the impending end of its ‘dictatorship’.
The statement released by the party after the briefing pointed out that it was “necessary to ponder over the PPPC’s apparent concern over the possibility of an alliance of Opposition parties in Guyana.”
The statement went on to point out that the State Media has been tasked with spreading misinformation in an effort to create chaos and undermine the effort they are assuming was being made.
The Party contended that the reaction of the Government was being fueled by the recent events in Trinidad and Tobago as well as Suriname where recent elections have brought new Governments forth to supplant the regimes that were in place.
The statement pointed out that the “talk about alliance” is nothing new to the political landscape of Guyana and went on to cite several instances when the collaboration between parties was greatest. Mention was made of the attempts to include the PPP in the alliance and power sharing initiatives.
The party included several ‘signs’ that the PPP was beginning to panic. One of these was an attempt to ‘penalise the small person’ for perceived threats.
The PNCR cited the case of the owner of the Canter used in the recent protests over the Fraser killing, as well as the continued threats to another vehicle owner who rendered similar assistance in the past.
The statement went on to say that they were using the “State Institution of the Police Force” to perpetrate these “unconstitutional acts”.
Another “sign of panic” was what the party called “the orchestrated attack on prominent politicians, journalists, media houses and free thinkers who dare to express differing opinions.” They pointed out as evidence of their claims, the “verbal assaults” on prominent businessmen, the removal of Government advertisements from the Stabroek News and Kaieteur News as well as repeated attacks on the Kaieteur News itself.
It also cited the attack on columnist, Freddie Kissoon, the suspension of CN Sharma’s Channel 6 TV License and what the party called the “trumped up allegations” against Peter Ramsaroop as further evidence.
Also called into question were the comments of the General Secretary of the PPP, Donald Ramotar, on the CADRES poll, particularly the fact that he said that the reports on corruption have been “blown out of proportion.”
The Party’s statement went on to point out that Ramotar also said that the PPP had been “compelled to keep the staff it inherited in Office from the previous administration” as another reason for the corruption. Which according to the statement could not have been true, considering the “witchhunt which followed the PPP’s accession to office in 1992.”
