Stationery Giants, Metro Office & Computer Supplies has renewed its sponsorship of National Female Cricket champions, the Rose Hall Town Metro Female Cricket Team.
The Company since 1998 has been sponsoring the team and for 2010 would be investing $160,000. The presentation took place on Wednesday last at the Berbice Cricket Board Office, New Amsterdam.
Secretary/CEO of the Club Hilbert Foster noted of the renewal of the sponsorship that it is a vote of confidence by Metro in the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club and the team.
Foster said that in 1997, the Club in a pro-active move formed a Female Team as the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) was once again placing strong emphasis on female cricket.
The team was formed with twelve members and in August 2008, metro came on board as the official sponsor. Under Metro’s sponsorship the team has produced three West Indies players, several for Guyana at the Under-19 and senior levels while a total of 18 have represented Berbice over the last three years at every level.
In 2009, the team defeated East Coast Demerara to be crowned National Female Champions at the Albion Sports Complex. Shemaine Campbell who represented the West Indies at the 2010 Female World Cup was also named runner-up Junior National Sportswoman for 2009 by the National Sports Commission.
Foster disclosed that the team had undertaken several community projects as part of their self development programme including a Mother’s Day Luncheon, Tribute to Heroes Programme and the Lower Corentyne Outstanding Students awards Scheme.
Nermala Sewdat on behalf of her fellow players expressed thanks to the management and staff of Metro for their continued sponsorship. She stated that the team was determined to retain the national championship later this year.
Sewdat, who was recently named Teacher of the Year by the Port Mourant Secondary School, noted that the keys to the team’s success over the last three years were discipline, hard work, commitment and team unity. She also praised the support of her male club members who have worked along with them and are solid rocks of supports whenever the team plays.
She expressed special thanks to Metro’s CEO Taajnauth Jadunauth and Regional Manager of Berbice Ms. Avia Lindie for their continued co-operation.
Ms. Lindie in her remarks mentioned that her Company was pleased to be associated with the national cricket champions while urging the players to uphold high standards always.
