There are times when you just give up and hope that Guyana would disappear and all of us move on to civilised territories elsewhere on the map. What goes through the mind of those who listen to the cabal that governs this nation when they hear the fiction heaped on them over and over and over that Guyana is going places but the private media paints a gloomy canvas? Yes, there are times when you wish that Guyana was a living, modern state with a civilised government.
On Thursday morning, I had to attend the stakeholders’ meeting with the ERC and its consultant, Lawrence Latchmansingh. This was the final product of the stakeholders’ dialogues with the ERC and its consultant over the future shape of the ERC. The PPP and perhaps by extension the ERC packed the Convention Centre with its own supporters. The PPP was represented by Donald Ramotar, the Government (GOG) by Gail Teixeira. It was too important a confabulation to miss because the PPP and the GOG could use the forum to propagandise. That it what exactly happened.
The night before, my computer broke down. So it meant that on Thursday, I would be out for most of the day and may be unable to get my Thursday KN page on time. The computer technician is an employee and he told me that the only time he can get off was during his lunch break but at that time I should be on the floor at the Convention Centre.
I decided that the other TUC delegate, Corretta Mc Donald, the AFC and GAP-ROAR people would confront Mr. Ramotar and Ms. Teixeira’s propaganda and I would leave to get my computer fixed.
As it turned out, I was in the advanced stage of my presentation when the technician called to say he was coming over to my home. I left the Convention Centre, drove home and found the technician waiting for me. Then King Kong struck. There was blackout. The technician could only return after six.
I went back in disgust to the Convention Centre. I rushed to a friend’s home, did my Thursday KN article on the USB stick and greeted Adam Harris at the KN office with complete frustration. I told Harris that I doubt with these kinds of hassles Guyanese put up with young people will want to stay here.
The technician called at 6PM to say he was coming over. I drove home to meet him. King Kong struck again. The blackout was still on. The technician left saying he may not get time to come on Friday. It meant I had to go to another friend’s home to type this very article. This is life in Guyana.
But wait. I haven’t mentioned what happened in the morning when I was traveling to get to the Convention Centre. At the junction of Lamaha and Albert Streets, King Kong made sure that civilisation at that site would not continue.
For more than a year, the traffic signals at that confluence have broken down. Vehicular madness has taken over. This is one of the busiest intersections in the entire land of Guyana. It caters for traffic headed for the following institutions, St. Joseph’s High School, North Georgetown High School, Tutorial High School, Richard Ishmael Primary School, Richard Ishmael High School, Stella Maris School, Guyana Technical Institute, Guyana Industrial Training Centre, Critchlow Labour College, the TUC head office, The Guyana Teachers’ Union, the CIOG, the Georgetown Public Hospital, Gandhi Youth Organisation among others.
A large percentage of vehicles from the East Coast coming into the city use Lamaha Street. It is truly a very busy area.
Everyday, while going to the National Park, I get entangled in the nightmare that lives at that junction, compliments of the little fascists and King Kong that rule this country. On Thursday, June 17, a minibus came within an inch, I repeat, an inch of hitting me at the passenger’s door. I just know one day, it would be me.
This guy just refused to observe the caution principle that we all must follow when traffic lights are not working. Finally, in the land of King Kong, we read in the newspaper where the preliminary inquiry into a murder charge took five years to begin and when the accused was set free by the judge, his lawyer told the court that he was in remand for almost ten years.
Yet King Kong tells the nation that Guyana is heading for a future. He really means the jungle.
