Minister of Labour, Manzoor Nadir has met with a high-level team from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) as part of his visit to Geneva to discuss the TACKLE project where he requested full clarification on the deliverables and its management.
Government has embarked on a child labour project, to reduce truancy and increase school attendance, by providing free transportation services to children.
The project dubbed, “Tackling Child Labour through Education”, is being funded by the European Union (EU) and is a collaborative effort between the Ministry and the ILO.
“This programme will see increased implementation with programmes being piloted through the Ministry of Education to reduce truancy and improve parenting,” Nadir said.
He noted that parenting, grand-parenting and community parenting have been key in motivating students to complete high school.
The Education Ministry has set a target to reduce the rate of high school leavers by half. “So our children have to get to, and stay in school,” the Labour Minister said.
The Ministry of Education has found that school attendance is intricately linked to uniform assistance and the provision of meals which are catered for in this year’s budget.
While acknowledging that truancy is an issue, Minister Nadir reiterated that Guyana is not a place where child labour can be found.
This position was supported by the Consultative Association of Guyanese Industry (CAGI) Representative, Samuel Goolsarran, who sits on the TACKLE Management Board along with representatives from Labour and the Ministry.
This year’s delegation comprised Assistant Chief Labour Occupational Safety and Health Officer, Lydia Greene, President of the FITUG, Carvil Duncan and
Goolsarran.
Minister Nadir kept a busy schedule and the delegates were able to participate effectively in the ILO conference.
Goolsarran and Duncan were active in the working and preparatory sessions, while members participated in other social dialogue presentations from Barbados, Singapore and Mexico. (GINA)
