Residents of Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, are peeved at the deplorable roads and drainage and irrigation, which contribute to flooding on the road and stagnation of water.
According to Ronald Arjune, the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) has received several complaints about the drainage and irrigation and it was brought to the attention of the chairman.
He said that upon speaking with the chairman of the NDC two weeks ago, he was promised that it would have been looked into; however, to date nothing has been done, and when calls are made to the NDC, officials would relate that he should speak to the chairman.
Arjune added that he then tried to make contact with the Region Four Executive Officer, but only was able to make contact with his assistant, who said that some checks would have been made, “But nothing up to now.”
He disclosed that the drain is outside a Mandir’s fence; no one lives there and it is up to the NDC to clean and maintain the area.
“The Better Hope NDC has neglected Better Hope community; there is work being done within the NDC, Success, Chateau Margot, Le Ressouvenir, and Atlantic Gardens are having better services. Better Hope is being neglected for the longest while.”
Arjune further disclosed that another issue is that roads in Better Hope are lower than the parapets, since two years ago cleaning was done, and all the debris remained on the parapets and the silt built up with time, causing the water to remain on the road instead of running off into the drains.
He revealed that the situation was so depressing that he filled his truck with builders’ waste, to fill up a major pothole in front of his house to prevent further flooding.
Another resident said that the persons in authority are not interested in carry out their functions, “they only want to collect money, and lay around.”
