Sixty-two year-old Charles Crandon of Courtland Village has been named Father-of-the-year by the Berbice Cricket Board.
Mr. Crandon who is the proud parent of national cricketers Esuan and Royston Crandon was honoured by the Board as a role model parent who played a major role in the development of his two sons.
Chairman of the BCB’s Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster at the presentation ceremony said the role of parents is very important in the development of their children. Foster stated that the Board was concerned about the attitude and behavior of several cricketers who are products of broken homes and as such is promoting the values of proper family structures.
Fathers, he said are the rock of each home and he challenged them to fulfill the roles given to them by God while describing Mr. Crandon as the perfect father who had the correct formula to being a good parent.
The formula includes personal discipline, understanding, patience, the ability to listen and to teach right from wrong. The long standing sports administrator stated that Esuan and Royston Crandon’s successes were achieved because their father instilled in them the importance of discipline, positive attitude, commitment and respect for others at a young age; he also led by example.
Royston apart from being a national junior and senior cricketer also represented the West Indies at the ODI level while Esuan played for the Region.
Mr. Crandon, in brief remarks expressed gratitude to the Berbice Cricket Board for honouring him and stated that he was very proud of his sons’ achievements on and off the cricket field. Crandon, who played first division cricket for the Guyana Defence Force in his younger days highlighted the importance of discipline in the development of his sons and stated that he also led by example in both his personal and professional life.
Crandon received a special gift from the Board and a father of the Year Certificate. The Berbice Cricket Board in May 2010 honoured Mrs. Shamshadbagan Chattergoon as the 2010 Mother of the year and the Board has announced that each year two special parents will be recognised as the Board strives to encourage parents to play an active role the development of their children.
