Dear Editor,
After reading Freddie Kissoon’s “The WPA: Aging deceivers or aging revolutionaries?” (Kaieteur News, June 15) It became clearer to me why the death of Dr. Walter Rodney has not been investigated. The intimate association of some WPA leaders to the PPP is purely opportunistic and also crucial in maintaining a relationship of continuing the story that the PNC killed Walter.
You see, Mr. Editor, if the WPA was really serious about Walter’s legacy as against using it to prop them up, they would have used his 30th Death Anniversary to renew the call for a Commission of Inquiry into his death.
This would have proven their commitment to Rodney and show that his death was not in vain and being used for the sole promotion of those self seekers.
The PNC did too say it supported an inquiry so the PPP has no excuses other than the WPA not pushing hard enough for it.
His son, Shaka Rodney, wife and other family members must be concerned because the same Sam Hinds who was elevated at a function over the weekend to commemorate Walter’s death is the very Prime Minister who had to be corrected by Dr. Pat Rodney when he told The Parliament that the Rodney family was no longer interested in an inquiry into Walter’s death.
The ordinary man of course knows that this is not true because if the Rodney family was not interested in an inquiry Shaka would not have spent all those days protesting in front of the government building asking for an inquiry.
Freddie and those who genuinely loved Walter should understand that many who claim to love Walter and make a big splash at his death anniversaries never really cared for the man. They have all hijacked his legacy and are in for the ride because of the political cover, glory and prominence it offered them then and now to have known the man and be associated with his name and achievements. Walter must be grieving for not only what Guyana has become and his struggles and death now seen as in vain, but also at how ruthless, self-serving and mercenary some of his ‘brothers and sisters’ have become.
Sadly, Walter continues to be betrayed by none other than his own.
